Herbs For Better Sleep

Herbal nightcaps are my favorite to wind down from a hectic day, I always resort to herbal remedies to help me fall asleep. In this blog, I will tell you about three herbal remedies that you can include in your nighttime routine.

Chamomile

The all-time wonder worker, my good friend Chamomile has to go first on the list because if you do not have anything in your cabinet, let Chamomile be that lifesaver to help you ease into sleep. Aside from Chamomile herb having benefits to assist in skin and digestive health, with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, Chamomile assists in reducing mild anxiety and helps you to fall asleep faster. If buying loose herbs, make sure you are buying from a reputable source and that it’s organic.

Chamomile is very gentle and has little to no side effects, however, if you are allergic to ragweed, pregnant, or on blood thinners it’s best if you check in with your Doctor before ingesting.

Chamomile has a natural sedative effect that helps you relax and have an easier time falling or easing anxiety symptoms during the day. Chamomile has a mildly sweet taste, it is deliciously soothing with honey. It can be drank warm/hot or in cooler seasons it can be steeped and sweetened while hot and cooled down. You can mix Chamomile with Lavender, Tulsi, or the other suggestions in this post.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a herbal ally that I have been including in my natural healing cabinet, with its stress-reducing properties, Ashwagandha helps reduce the symptoms of feeling on edge and assists in restful sleep.

This herb has been included in several research journals but not all the benefits have been found, however, the research is promising that the benefits are greater than what we had thought.

When it comes to mental health, reducing symptoms of feeling on edge, or with low energy is the focal point to your wellness. According to PubMed Ashwagandha can assist with feelings of depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Ashwagandha has a subtle nutty flavor, but it can be accompanied by other adaptogens. Again, I suggest consulting with your doctor before ingesting natural herbal remedies.

PassionFlower

The first time I came across Passion Flower, I thought it would be a great herb to include in self-love teas and body oils, I then found that this beautifully named herb is also great for relaxing and sleeping. Presently, Passionflower is used to treat anxiety, and insomnia and help individuals sleep better.

Passionflower can be taken as a tea, infusion, or tincture to assist in relaxing the body and mind and helping you fall asleep. I use passionflower as an herb to assist in my spiritual journey as well, to maintain grace and space for any feelings that may show up for me. The name itself will make you feel relaxed.

The herb is still being researched, therefore I suggest always consulting your doctor before ingesting.

Conclusion

You now have three suggestions to include in your nighttime routine if you are experiencing difficulty falling asleep or simply relaxing into the night. I would suggest doing more research into which may be suitable for you regarding taste preference and any side effects you believe you may experience. Always consult with your doctor. Let me know which herbs have worked for you to reduce anxiety and help you sleep.
